How to Clean Your Cosplay Costumes

Costumes can be a challenge to keep clean, but you do need to take care of them so they will stay looking good, last a long time, and not stink up the convention center. (you know who you are!)

But some costumes can be a challenge to wash and if you try it, they’ll never look the same. So, what do you do?

Proper cleaning and maintenance are essential to ensure your cosplay pieces look their best, so here are some practical tips on how to keep your cosplays clean and extend their lifespan.

Tips for Cleaning Cosplay Costumes

Spot Clean When Possible

Before resorting to full washes, try spot cleaning. You’ll want to do this immediately after wearing, so the stain doesn’t settle in.

Use a gentle fabric cleaner or a mixture of water and mild detergent to treat small stains. Always test on an inconspicuous area first to ensure it doesn’t damage the fabric.

Clean it with Vodka

Vodka cleaning is a method often used with stage costumes and is a great choice because it is antibacterial, quick-drying, and colorless. These properties make it effective at killing bacteria that cause odors, evaporating quickly without leaving watermarks, and being safe for most fabrics since it won’t stain.

Put the vodka in a spray bottle and focus on areas that are prone to odors. Just lightly mist the fabric and allow to air dry. You don’t need to soak it! Test a small section for delicate fabrics first.

Be Careful with Dry Cleaning

Dry cleaning may seem like a great option, but not if you have anything glued to your costume! I didn’t think about this one time and got back a pirate coat that used to be fully decorated. All the ribbons and details came cleanly off and were in the pocket.

Follow Fabric Care Instructions

Always check the care labels on your costumes. Different fabrics require different cleaning methods. For example, some may be machine washable, while others might need hand washing or dry cleaning. Adhering to these instructions will help maintain the integrity of the fabric.

Be Mindful of Sugar Stains

If someone spills a clear drink on you, like wine or Sprite, you might think your costume will be OK. But when you take it out of storage months later, it will have big brown stains on it!

This happens when a sugary drink is spilled. It goes on clear but later the sugar stain turns an ugly brown that’s very noticeable on white or light-colored clothing.

Hand Wash Delicate Pieces

For delicate fabrics like lace, satin, or sequins, hand washing is usually safer. Use cold water and a gentle detergent like Woolite in the sink and avoid wringing or twisting the fabric to prevent damage. Gently swish the fabric in the water and rinse thoroughly.

Use Garment Bags

If you need to machine wash your cosplay, place it in a garment bag to protect it from snagging or tearing. Use a gentle cycle and cold water to minimize wear and tear. This extra layer of protection can help preserve delicate details and works great for hosiery and small pieces.

Dry Flat or Hang to Dry

Avoid using a dryer, as high heat can damage many costume materials. Instead, lay the costume flat on a clean towel to air dry or hang it up, making sure it’s supported properly to prevent stretching. This will help maintain the shape and fit of your cosplay.

So Fresh and So Clean

By following these tips, you can keep your cosplays looking fresh and ready for your next event. Regular maintenance and careful cleaning will ensure your costumes last for many conventions to come.

Personally, I often resort to the vodka method because I hate washing my cosplays and risking them getting messed up. I wash them only when absolutely necessary.

Keeping your cosplays clean is an ongoing process, but with these tips, you’ll be able to preserve their beauty and functionality for many years. Happy (clean) cosplaying!
