Make Your Own Bride of Frankenstein Wig Costume DIY

Here’s an easy way to make a Bride of Frankenstein wig using a ready-to-wear costume wig as a base and adding the white streaks.

Is this the most accurate Bride of Frankenstein wig? No. If you want real accuracy, she actually has red hair with grey streaks. The film was shot in black and white, which made it look like she has black hair with white streaks.

But it’s a great option if you want something to make easily, for not a lot of money. And I think it worked pretty well for my Bride of Frankenstein costume, pictured below!

The Bride of Frankenstein Wig Base

I started out with this wig on Amazon by Rubies Costumes: Gogo Beehive Wig. It is pretty basic- just an inner hair net and no adjustable hooks.

To make it stand up like this, you need to stuff it with something. I used air-filled packing pillows to make it as light as possible. You can also use newspaper or packing paper.

And no matter what I tried, I couldn’t get that red jewel off the front without damaging the wig, so I painted it black, and then hot glued a few clumps of hair over it to hide it.

Adding the White Streaks

Adding the iconic white streaks are a must when making a Bride of Frankenstein wig.

The absolute easiest way of making the white streaks is to paint them on. You can also try glueing on white hair. Maybe you will have better luck than me!

I kept having a hard time making it look right and decided painting it would be a better way to go.

I used white acrylic craft paint, which is thick enough to show up white against the black hair. The one I used is pictured below: Apple Barrel Matte White Acrylic Craft Paint

I stuffed the white, sat it on a wig head, and painted the streaks with a wide paint brush.

I let it dry and went back for a second coat where it needed it, but it did a pretty good job on the first coat.

Wearing Your Bride of Frankenstein Wig

Getting the Bride of Frankenstein wig to stay on requires a LOT of bobby pins. You don’t want this thing getting knocked off. Put them all around it top and bottom.

Because the style of the hair on the bottom, I also pinned the bangs to the side. They were too long on me otherwise.

And I added goggles because I was doing my own twist on the look.

Make Sure You Do a Wig Test Run!

This wig has a lot of height! Watch the video below where I tested it out to see if I’d be able to get in the car wearing it.

I had to watch going through doorways all night as well, lol.

Good luck making your wig! If you want to buy one already made and look on Etsy, you’ll actually see several people selling wigs using this wig as a base and they added white streaks. There are also some really great looking custom wigs for $250+.
