I first saw the Mad Hatter Cottage on Instagram and immediately fell in love with it. This dark, whimsical Alice in Wonderland-themed cottage looked like something straight out of a twisted fairytale, and I knew I needed to stay there.
When we were trying to think of something different to do for our family summer vacation, I checked the Airbnb listing on a whim. I was surprised it when I saw that it was available!
We booked four nights at the Mad Hatter Cottage in Mineral Bluff, Georgia, and it turned out to be my favorite Airbnb we’ve stayed in so far. Click here to see the Airbnb listing.
The cottage is close to Blue Ridge but tucked away at the end of a quiet road on the water. It’s peaceful, quirky, and absolutely packed with little details. You could spend your entire stay discovering things you didn’t notice when you first walked in.
A Dark and Whimsical Trip Down the Rabbit Hole
This isn’t a bright Disney-style Alice in Wonderland cottage. The theme is darker, moodier and much more grown-up.
The entire house is decorated, and I mean the entire house inside and out.
There are twinkling lights hanging from the ceiling, unusual lamps, fairytale-inspired artwork and little surprises everywhere you look. Everything feels intentional down to the smallest detail.
Even the laundry room is interesting! The appliances have octopus tentacles winding around them, with bubbles hanging from the ceiling.
The bedrooms were beautiful, the beds were comfortable and I loved all the fairytale details throughout the rooms.
It’s obvious that a lot of creativity and love went into this place.
One thing to know before booking is that the current Airbnb listing specifically states that the cottage is not considered suitable for children because of the terrain and some adult-themed motifs in the house. So, keep that in mind before planning your stay.
My 10-year-old son was fine, but there are a lot of little things that younger children could get into or break.
And the only really “adult” thing might be the wallpaper in the Queen of Hearts bathroom. It’s all pages of very spicey romance novels. Luckily, my son isn’t much a reader. I’m probably the only one who noticed it!
Don’t Miss the Secret Queen of Hearts Bathroom
One of my favorite surprises was the speakeasy-style Queen of Hearts bathroom. Yes, the one mentioned above with the romance novel wallpaper.
It looks like a regular bookshelf recessed in the wall, but there’s actually a hidden bathroom behind it.

Of course, once you get inside, the whole thing continues the theme with Queen of Hearts-inspired decor. It was exactly the kind of unexpected detail that made staying here so much fun.
Even the Dining Table Does Something
The dining room table was another favorite. Underneath the glass are gears, and there’s a handle you can actually turn to make the gears move.
And naturally, the Mad Hatter’s cottage wouldn’t be complete without tea. There were pretty teacups, a teapot and tea waiting for us, along with snacks like chocolate and popcorn.
The fireplace is also amazing. It’s designed to look as though it’s built into the trunk of a tree.
Since we visited during the summer, it was much too warm to use the indoor fireplace. I would love to come back in the fall when the temperatures are cooler because I think this place would be even more magical surrounded by fall leaves with a fire going inside.
Everything Is Labeled for a Reason
You’ll notice labels on switches and controls throughout the cottage, and they’re actually very helpful.
There are so many different lighting elements that you wouldn’t necessarily know what every switch operates without them. There are twinkling ceiling lights, colorful lamps, fairy lights outside and all kinds of atmospheric lighting that add to the Wonderland experience.
Take some time to play around with the lighting because it completely changes the atmosphere of the cottage, especially after dark.
The Creekside Hot Tub
The hot tub has a fantastic location overlooking the water, and all three of us enjoyed using it.
I do have one warning: there is a lot of chlorine in the water. Not so much that I noticed when we were in it, but I noticed the next day when my dark blue sports bra was a new faded light blue color.
Of course, that’s pretty much expected with a multi-person hot tub. It’s chlorinated for a reason! I’d rather have that than a dirty one with grimy water. This one was nice and clean.
Sitting in the hot tub surrounded by the trees and listening to the water was wonderful and relaxing.
We Even Used the Fire Pit in August
I was hot during the days, but mornings and evenings in the mountains were noticeably cooler.
And even though it was warm, we still used the fire pit in the evenings.
The outdoor spaces are a huge part of what makes the cottage special. There’s also a screened porch with a swinging daybed where you can sit and enjoy the view.
The hosts also offer a MAD Theatre setup that lets you watch movies outside on a screen. We had the setup available during our visit, but ultimately didn’t use it because it was still a little too warm to sit outside for an entire movie.
The current Airbnb listing notes that the theater is available year-round for an additional rental fee, so check the listing for current pricing and arrangements.
Mornings by the Water
One of my favorite things to do was simply sit on the porch in the morning and watch the water go by.
The whole area is incredibly peaceful.
Three large white geese (possibly ducks?) regularly came wandering by. I’m still not entirely sure whether they were geese or ducks, but they certainly sounded like geese with all their honking.
We also tried fishing but didn’t manage to catch anything. Our host mentioned that rainbow trout can be caught in the water and that river otters occasionally make an appearance.
I didn’t get a river otter sighting, but I did see some deer. Lots and lots of deer!
We spotted them in fields throughout the area, and one afternoon we even had a deer show up right in the front driveway of the cottage. I thought I heard someone on the porch and when I walked around the side of the house to see, a big deer went running!
Playing Giant Chess in the Garden
There’s a large human-size chessboard in the side garden, which was another fun activity.
My husband and son enjoyed playing several rounds of chess.
Then the Crazy Storm Hit
Our stay also came with an experience we definitely hadn’t planned on, when a big thunderstorm hit one night.
The rain absolutely hammered the metal roof, which was surprisingly soothing even though it was loud. I managed to sleep pretty well through what turned out to be a very serious storm.
By the next morning, the water beside the cottage had risen dramatically. It didn’t reach the porch, thankfully, but it got incredibly high and remained high for the next couple of days.
We later learned just how bad the storm had been for the surrounding area.
McCaysville, a small town near Mineral Bluff on the Georgia-Tennessee border, experienced devastating flash flooding during the night of August 1 into August 2, 2026. The National Weather Service reported rainfall estimates of 5 to 7 inches in less than four hours in the McCaysville-Copperhill area.
Downtown McCaysville was hit especially hard, with businesses, homes, the police department and post office sustaining flood damage.
We drove through the area the next day because we had planned on eating at a restaurant on the water, but the area was a mess, and everything was closed.
Mud was everywhere and you could see water lines reaching far up the walls of some buildings. There were piles of wet debris from the cleanup.
It was pretty crazy to see how bad it was just a short distance away.
Our Hosts Went Above and Beyond
The storm also gave us a good example of just how responsive our hosts were.
When we first arrived, we couldn’t locate the TV remote. We looked everywhere. When I finally mentioned it to our host, James, he immediately ordered a replacement remote and batteries to be delivered.
Then the storm hit and the delivery was understandably canceled. Somehow they still managed to get the replacement delivered later that day.
So even in the middle of a major storm and flooding throughout the area, we got our remote and got the TV working.
Not that we spent much time watching TV!
Most of the time we just left the cute Alice in Wonderland-themed screensaver on because it fit the cottage perfectly.
Things to Do Near Mad Hatter Cottage
As much as I loved hanging around the cottage, there’s plenty to explore in the North Georgia mountains.
We visited the Toccoa River Swinging Bridge, a 270-foot suspension bridge over the Toccoa River that’s a fun destination if you enjoy scenic hikes.
We also went to Expedition: Bigfoot! The Sasquatch Museum in Blue Ridge, which is definitely worth a stop if you have even a passing interest in Bigfoot.
Another outing took us to Long Creek Falls, a beautiful two-tiered waterfall along the Benton MacKaye Trail near Three Forks. The waterfall is about 50 feet high and makes a great hiking destination. It is a short, easy hike to get to the falls.
There are plenty of other hiking trails, waterfalls and outdoor activities throughout the Blue Ridge area, so you can easily fill several days exploring.
Restaurants Close Earlier Than You Might Expect
One thing we quickly discovered is that you don’t want to wait too long to figure out dinner.
A lot of places in the area close around 9 PM, and some close even earlier.
We arrived late on our first day and at about 8:30 PM were scrambling to find somewhere still serving food. We ended up at Chester Brunnenmeyer’s Bar & Grill in downtown Blue Ridge. (click here to read my Yelp review)
Chester’s is a rustic American bar and grill on East Main Street and ended up being a very convenient discovery after our late arrival.
If you’re accustomed to having plenty of restaurant options available at 9 or 10 at night, plan ahead while you’re staying in the mountains.
Finding the Cottage Can Be a Little Confusing
The hosts provide good directions, a video, and GPS will get you most of the way there.
Our GPS stopped really early, near the beginning of the road. When this happens, my best piece of advice is: keep going.
At one point you’ll encounter signs warning “No Trespassers, Keep out!” It can make you wonder whether you’ve made a wrong turn or missed it. We even doubled back before figuring out we needed to just keep going.
The warnings were for the neighboring property on the left. We continued up toward the right as instructed, and the cottage was all the way at the end of the road by the water.
Definitely read the host’s arrival instructions before you get there rather than relying entirely on GPS.
Would I Stay at Mad Hatter Cottage Again?
Absolutely! This is my favorite Airbnb we’ve stayed in.
The location is peaceful, the cottage is beautiful and the Alice in Wonderland theme goes far beyond a few themed decorations. There are surprises tucked into practically every room and outside.
I’m sure there are plenty of details I’ve forgotten to mention! But part of the fun is walking into the cottage and discovering some of them yourself. There’s a whole musical treasure hunt with hidden QR codes, that I didn’t have time to get into, but would do if we went again.
We stayed for four nights during the summer and loved it, but I’d especially like to return in the fall. Cooler weather would mean using the indoor fireplace, spending more time around the fire pit and enjoying those outdoor spaces surrounded by fall colors.
If you’re looking for an ordinary mountain cabin, this isn’t it.
But if you want to disappear down the rabbit hole for a few days and stay somewhere completely different, Mad Hatter Cottage makes for a wonderfully weird, peaceful and fairytale-like escape in the Georgia mountains.
