10 Things Cosplayers are Thankful For

Happy Thanksgiving everyone! In the spirit of the holiday, I’ve put together a list of 10 things cosplayers are thankful for.

1. Hot Glue

Hot glue has so many uses, and anyone who cosplays or crafts has probably spent more than their fair share of time using a hot glue gun. Some of us even have the scars to prove it. It’s one thing I never leave home without when I travel to a convention!

2. Friends Who Understand Your Obsession

Some people may not care whether you found exactly the right kind of buttons for your latest costume, or you spent three days styling a wig, but your cosplay friends will understand.

3. Thrift Stores That Carry Exactly the Weird Thing You Needed

Whether it’s the perfect jacket, a fabric you didn’t know you needed, or that random item you’ll promptly tear apart, you never know what you’ll find at a thrift store or Goodwill.

4. Wigs

Real hair is hard to keep styled and constantly dyeing it or styling can leave it damaged. This is why I have so many wigs! I even have a bunch of wigs that look like my regular hair, but on a really good hair day.

5. The First Moment a Costume Actually Comes Together

This is a magical moment, when you finally put it all on and it looks perfect. This is usually sometime after the part where everything looks like crap, and you want to throw it away and start over.

6. Convention Air Conditioner

Costumes get hot. Nobody loves AC better than a cosplayer wearing five layers of clothing, armor and a wig.

7. Photographers Who Make Everyone Look Like a Superhero

Pros, hobbyists, friends with phones—anyone who can capture your costume in its best light deserves a gratitude award.

8. Hotels with Good Lighting and Mirrors

It’s always frustrating to be at a convention hotel, all prepared to get ready, and you can’t see a darn thing. We need light! And a full-length mirror is always a nice bonus.

9. Comfortable Shoes

Comfortable shoes and cosplay rarely go hand in hand. There are so many costumes I like, but one look at the shoes and I’m like, nope. Can’t walk around all day in those!

Some costumes are great if you are just standing for photos but walking a con floor all day is a different story. So, when a cosplay has a comfy shoe option? That’s the best!

10. The Cosplay Community Itself

As a cosplayer myself, I’m always happy to meet other cosplayers and fans of costumes and geeky things in general. It was a very small group of people back when I first got into cosplay. Now it is massive! It’s cool to see all those people enjoying this creative hobby.

And Thank You for Reading!
