When heading to a convention or cosplay event, packing your travel bag can feel like assembling a survival kit. Having the right items on hand ensures that you’re prepared for unexpected mishaps, last-minute adjustments, and the day’s challenges. Here’s a guide to help you pack the ultimate cosplay travel bag.
What to Pack When Going to a ComicCon
Whether you are packing a bag for a day at ComicCon, or a suitcase for traveling a great distance, these tips will make sure it’s a success.
Cosplay Essentials
Your cosplay outfit is the centerpiece of your trip, so pack it carefully. Use garment bags to keep costumes wrinkle-free, especially those with delicate fabrics or intricate details. If your costume has multiple components, such as armor, props, or accessories, store each item in labeled bags or containers to keep everything organized.
If you are traveling by plane, consider putting delicate items in a box you can carry on the plane. I once traveled with my entire Slave Leia costume in a big hat box. Just don’t try to bring any weapons! It doesn’t matter if they are fake, just don’t do it.
Bring extra fasteners, such as Velcro strips, safety pins, or snaps, to repair any unexpected breaks. Also bring a glue gun and extra glue sticks.
A travel sewing kit with thread that matches your costume’s colors is also a must-have. For wigs, pack a wig stand or wig head to help style it easily, along with a wig brush and some bobby pins to keep it in place.
Makeup and Skincare
Cosplay often requires detailed makeup, so pack a complete makeup kit tailored to your look. Include foundation, eyeshadow, eyeliner, setting powder, and brushes, along with specialty items like body paint or prosthetics if needed. Don’t forget makeup remover and skincare essentials such as a gentle cleanser and moisturizer to refresh your skin after a long day.
Setting spray is a lifesaver for keeping your makeup intact for hours. Additionally, consider bringing blotting paper to manage shine and touch-up tools for quick fixes during the day.
Prop Care and Maintenance
If your cosplay includes props, ensure they’re convention-safe and easy to transport. Use bubble wrap or foam padding to protect fragile props during travel and make sure they are in your checked baggage. Hot glue guns or super glue, duct tape, and a multi-tool can be incredibly helpful for on-the-spot repairs.
For larger props, collapsible or modular designs are ideal for portability. Keep screws, bolts, or other connecting pieces in a small, labeled bag so they don’t get lost.
Comfort and Health
Conventions are often long and physically demanding, so it’s important to prioritize your comfort and health. Pack comfortable shoes—even if your cosplay involves elaborate footwear, having an alternative pair for walking or breaks can save your feet. Blister pads and bandages are also useful to prevent discomfort.
Staying hydrated is essential, so include a refillable water bottle in your bag. Lightweight snacks like granola bars, trail mix, or fruit can keep your energy levels up. If you’re wearing contact lenses as part of your cosplay, pack eye drops and a lens case with solution.
If you are drinking at the con, pack something to help avoid hangovers. I recommend trying PartySmart. I used it at DragonCon, which is like a big 5-day cosplay party, and felt good every morning. Click here to read my PartySmart review.
Stay fresh with deodorant, hand sanitizer, and wet wipes. These conventions can get crowded, and are notorious for getting stinky, so prioritizing hygiene is a must. Don’t be the person stinking up the con.
If you have social anxiety and have a hard time dealing with the large comic con crowds, CBD gummies can be helpful. I personally use them and always bring a bag of gummy bears.
Electronics and Photography
Capture your hard work with a camera or smartphone. If you’re planning to take photos, bring a portable charger or power bank to keep your devices running all day. Additional memory cards can be helpful if you’re taking lots of pictures.
For advanced cosplayers, LED lighting or sound elements might be part of your costume. Bring spare batteries and a small toolkit for these components to avoid any malfunctions during the event.

Packing for the Unexpected
Unexpected situations can arise, so prepare a mini emergency kit. Include items like:
- Double-sided tape for wardrobe fixes.
- Stain remover pens for quick cleaning.
- Scissors or small shears for adjustments.
- Pain relievers and any necessary medications.
- A small pack of tissues or wipes.
- Mini sewing kit
- Glue gun
- Safety pins
If you’re traveling with others, coordinating emergency items ensures that your group has everything covered without duplicating supplies unnecessarily.
Packing Tips for Travel
Space is often at a premium when traveling to conventions. Use vacuum-sealed bags for bulky items like capes or cloaks to save room in your suitcase. Rolling your clothes instead of folding them can also help maximize space and minimize wrinkles.
For airline travel, check the rules regarding costumes and props. Certain materials may require special handling or need to be checked in as baggage. Clearly label your luggage with your name and contact information in case of loss.
Staying Organized at the Convention
Once you’re at the event, keep your bag organized so you can find what you need quickly. Use a backpack or a rolling bag with multiple compartments for easy access. Consider a separate pouch or organizer for smaller items like makeup, tools, and chargers.
Having a checklist for each day of the convention can also be helpful. Review your schedule and pack what you’ll need for specific events or photoshoots in advance.
Wrapping Up the Day
After the event, proper storage and cleaning of your cosplay items are important. Bring plastic bags or garment bags to separate worn items from clean ones. A small spray bottle of vodka can help freshen up fabrics that can’t be washed immediately. For wigs, detangle and store them carefully to avoid damage.
Packing a well-thought-out cosplay travel bag can make the difference between a stressful experience and an enjoyable one. With preparation and organization, you can focus on showcasing your hard work and creativity, knowing that you’re ready for anything the convention throws your way.
