How to Visit the Vampire Speakeasy in New Orleans

Potions is a unique vampire speakeasy located on Bourbon St. in New Orleans. Here’s how to secure entry into this secret vampire bar.

Step 1: Visit Boutique du Vampyre

The Boutique du Vampyre is located at 709 1/2 St. Ann Street. It’s a tiny little shop with vampire themed items and curiosities.

Visit them during the day and check out their clothing and trinkets. Just be sure to check the prices before purchasing anything. My friend Heather went to purchase a very small suncatcher with lips and fangs, and it was $60! So always ask if there isn’t a price tag.

We asked the person working there about the speakeasy, and she handed us a card. That was it. No password- just a special card. She said to give it to the vampire in the back of Fritzel’s.

Step 2: Head to Bourbon St.

Potions vampire speakeasy is located in the back of Fritzel’s jazz bar, which is at 733 Bourbon St.

It’s a very popular place and supposed to have great live music. However, we were just there for the vampires, so we made our way through the crowd and out into the back alley.

Step 3: Locate the Vampire

Once we went out back, we saw a burly looking guy sitting at a table. He looked more like a Hell’s Angel than a vampire, with an attitude to match.

We asked about the vampire speakeasy, and he asked if we had the card (again, no password needed!). So, we handed him the card, paid a $10 cover charge, and he opened the door to a staircase.

On the way in, Heather offered to give him a hug, and he gruffly denied the request. Biker vampires do not like hugs.

Step 4: Do Not Pet the Cats

The staircase led upstairs to the Potions Lounge, where a lot of cats were lounging outside. It’s hard to resist petting the cats, but there are several signs telling you NOT to pet them.

We still pet them.

Step 5: Enter the Vampire Speakeasy

The Potions Lounge is pretty cool inside! Very Victorian vampire-esque decor. The crowd inside was a little touristy, with no vampires in sight.

Or maybe they were just blending in?

They have a tarot card reader, and we got our cards read while sipping some tasty mixed drinks with fun vampire-themed names.

The lounge is two rooms, with an outside balcony, or “gallery” as they call it in New Orleans.

It wasn’t crowded at all because they limit the number of people allowed inside. The place has a cool gothic vibe, so we had fun just hanging out for a while. It’s definitely worth a visit if you like gothic spooky things.

Just remember not to pet the cats.
