Everything You Need for a Velma Cosplay

Jinkies! It’s time to put together a Velma Dinkley cosplay from Scooby-Doo and we’ve got all the clues for a custom look from wig to costume.

Velma Dinkley is a fictional character from the “Scooby-Doo” franchise, which includes an animated TV series, and both animated and live-action movies. She is known for her intelligence, and often depicted as the brains of the mystery-solving gang.

Her trademark outfit includes an orange turtleneck, a short pleated red skirt, knee-high orange socks, and red Mary Jane shoes. She wears her brown hair in a bob with bangs and accessorizes with black-framed glasses.

The Outfit

The great thing about cosplaying as Velma is that she wears a pretty comfy outfit! You’ll need a short red pleated skirt and orange long sleeve turtleneck.

I wore an orange sweater, but on last check it is currently unavailable. But there are some great Velma cosplay sets that come with everything you need, and their orange top is much lighter, which would be better for here in Florida!

This set actually comes with the wig and everything:

If you were to search for separate pieces, I found mine by searching “orange turtleneck sweater” and “red skater skirt.”

I actually wear the same red skirt for Supergirl!

The skirt by itself is $15: Red Skirt by Made by Johnny

Velma’s Accessories

Velma wears orange knee socks, nerdy black framed glasses and carries a magnifying glass so she doesn’t miss any clues!

You’ll want to find non-prescription glasses if you don’t actually need them. It looks better than popping out the lenses.

And that magnifying glass actually comes in handy! I use it all the time to read the tiny print on the back of cosmetics bottles.

Make-up

And speaking of cosmetics, you won’t need to go heavy on the makeup for Velma. I did a simple look with neutral shades and added fake freckles.

Need to know how to add fake freckles? Check out the end of this Reel, where I show how I use a bobby pin to dot on freckles:

That’s it! Velma Dinkley from head to toe.

If it’s just a one-time cosplay or Halloween costume, the set that comes with everything is a good way to go. But if you plan to wear this again and again, doing the custom pieces will give you the best fit and overall look.
